Through its founding organizations, NSAR dates back to 1958, when it was formed by a special act of the Nova Scotia legislature. Today, NSAR represents six regions and one Board: Halifax-Dartmouth, South Shore, Cape Breton/Highlands, Northern Nova Scotia, Yarmouth and the Annapolis Valley Real Estate Board.
Governed by its board of directors, NSAR's focus is the organization of real estate activities for its members and the development of common goals across Nova Scotia. The goals include promoting higher industry standards, providing educational opportunities to ensure members maintain a current knowledge of industry standards and practices, and assuring the general public of a high professional standard of conduct and practice by brokers and salespeople.

These goals are achieved through the hard work of the dedicated staff at the NSAR office, but also through the many volunteers who contribute their time to the following committees:

• Arbitration Committee
• By-law Committee
• Professional Standards and Conduct Review Committee
• Education Committee
